Dhanushkodi was a functioning port town until the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone took it and the train that was crossing the causeway. What's left — church walls, a railway platform, a road running out into the sand — sits at the tip of Pamban island, 24 km from Sri Lanka. Getting there is half the trip: the Pamban bridge crossing, then a long straight road with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, ending at Arichal Munai where the two visibly meet. **Getting there.** About 570 km from Bengaluru (11–12 hours overnight) via Madurai and Rameswaram; the same distance from Chennai, usually by night train to Rameswaram. **Where to stay.** Hotels in Rameswaram town — there is no stay at Dhanushkodi itself.
