Skandagiri — Kalavara Durga to locals — is a ruined hill fort at 1,450 m near Chikkaballapur, and the most popular night trek in Karnataka. Groups start walking around midnight with headlamps, take two to three hours over 4 km of rocky trail, and wait at the top for the cloud layer below to catch the light. It is a moderate climb rather than a hard one, but the darkness and loose rock make an organiser worth having. Access rules change from season to season, so check that your operator has current permission. **Getting there.** 70 km from Bengaluru near Chikkaballapur; departures leave the city around 11 pm and are back by 10 am. **Where to stay.** A night trek — no stay involved. Some operators add a Nandi Hills breakfast halt instead.
October to March, when the pre-dawn cloud inversions form. Skip the monsoon — the rock face is slick and the view is a wall of grey.
